Mark Webber is to undergo surgery after the Hungarian Grand Prix later this month to remove pins inserted in his leg after a cycling accident last year.

Webber, who won his first grand prix in Germany last weekend, will have further surgery at the end of the season.

He admits his leg was "a long way from healed" when the season started.

Webber will have four weeks in which to regain full fitness between the Hungarian Grand Prix and the following race in Valencia on 23 August.

With nine out of 17 races gone, Webber lies third in the Formula 1 drivers' championship, 22.5 points behind leader Jenson Button.

But his Red Bull team have momentum behind them, having won the last three races.

"I think I was kidding myself a bit," the Australian said. "It is absolutely clear that the leg was a long way from healed and it was still broken.

"It was just the metal holding it in place so it has come a long way since then."
