Wolfsburg keen on striker Martins

Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh has confirmed his interest in signing Newcastle forward Obafemi Martins.

Nigerian Martins was quoted on Monday as saying he was keen on a move to the German champions, and Veh admitted the 24-year-old is on his list of targets.

Veh said: "We have two tall strikers in Edin Dzeko and Grafite and they both play pretty much centrally.

"Therefore we are looking for a player who can combine with them both, who can come in from out wide."

Martins has expressed his desire to leave Tyneside, following Newcastle's relegation to the Championship, and said on Monday that Wolfsburg is his preferred destination.

"The Bundesliga will soon be the best league in the world," said Martins. "Therefore Wolfsburg excites me. I hope the transfer happens."

Martins was signed by former Magpies boss Glenn Roeder in 2006 and has scored 35 times for United.
