New world number one Lee Westwood finished his second round strongly at the HSBC Champions challenge to sit one shot behind leader Francesco Molinari.

England's Westwood fell three shots behind the Italian at one point on the back nine, but he hit back to post a round of 70 and finish on eight under.

Deposed world number one Tiger Woods is five off the lead after a difficult 72.

Westwood is well placed to retain his ranking, with rivals Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson five shots behind him.

The highlight of his late surge came when he hit a driver on to the par four 16th green to set up a birdie.

The frustration for Woods, who Westwood replaced as world number one, boiled over on the 18th when the American dropped then kicked his driver angrily.

South Africa's Ernie Els hit a superb round of 65 to leave himself two shots off the lead, along with compatriot Jaco Van Zyl and Scotland's Richard Ramsay.

More to follow.
