The 2008 French Open finalist broke Estonia's Kanepi, seeded 25, twice in the both the first and second sets.

Safina, who had never been past the second round at Melbourne Park, wrapped up the win in one hour and six minutes.

Later on Friday, world number one and top seed Jelena Jankovic plays Ai Sugiyama and fifth seed Ana Ivanovic takes one Alisa Kleybanova.

Russia's Nadia Petrova became the first woman to reach the fourth round when, having won the first set 6-1, her opponent Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan retired hurt.

Petrova, seeded 10, will play compatriot Vera Zvonareva or Italy's Sara Errani for a place in the quarter-finals.

Next up for Safina is 15th seed Alize Cornet of France or Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, seeded 19.

The Russian struggled through her opening two matches but hit top form to beat Kanepi and lay down a marker for the rest of the tournament.

If she wins the Australian Open she will replace Jankovic as world number one.
