BOSTON -- Apparently no one wants a red luxury automobile owned by a World Series champion.
The eBay auction for Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz's 2005 Mercedes Benz SL-Class SL65 AMG ended on Thursday without any apparent legitimate bids on the seven-day listing. There were 18 bids, including a high of $525,000, but they were all either ruled out or retracted.
EBay spokeswoman Kim Rubey said it is up to the seller to screen bids, but "eBay rules prohibit bids that are not legitimate and we will certainly take action against anyone who submitted a bogus bid."
Ortiz's listing called the car a "head turner," and said he bought the 12-cylinder, 604 horsepower vehicle for about $205,000 as a present to himself after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. He added about $35,000 in accessories.
"This car has been pampered for its short life, taking Big Papi back and forth to Fenway Park," the listing said. "The car has a little over 4,000 miles on it and has been always dealer serviced and is in immaculate, showroom condition."
