Birmingham pull out of Ghaly deal

Birmingham have pulled out of a deal to sign Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly from Premier League rivals Tottenham.

A 3m deal had been agreed with the Blues set to secure Ghaly on a three-year contract, subject to the player receiving a work permit.

"We can confirm we will not be proceeding with the transfer of Hossam Ghaly from Tottenham," said a statement from the St Andrews side.

The club would only say that they had pulled out for "footballing reasons".

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has said he thought Ghaly was the ideal replacement for their departed captain Stephen Clemence.

Ghaly joined Tottenham from Dutch side Feyenoord on transfer deadline day in January 2006.

He went on to make 34 appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit, scoring three goals in the process.
