Everton sign goalkeeper Wessels

Everton have signed German goalkeeper Stefan Wessels on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has signed an initial one-year contract at Goodison Park after leaving FC Cologne.

"It's the first time I've played for a club outside of Germany but the Premier League is very exciting and I'm looking forward to it," said Wessels.

He is Everton boss David Moyes' fourth summer signing, alongside Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and fellow former Bundesliga man Steven Pienaar.

Wessels started his career at Bayern Munich, where he deputised for German international Oliver Kahn.

A lack of regular first-team football led to Wessels leaving for Cologne in 2003.

The German will now provide competition for regular goalkeeper Tim Howard as well as John Ruddy and Iain Turner at Everton.
