Flushing Meadows, New York, 27 August-9 September
Lleyton Hewitt took just over an hour and a half to thrash American Amer Delic in his opening US Open match. The 2001 champion was a class above Delic in a 6-2 6-4 6-2 victory. Hewitt, the 16th seed who could meet Novak Djokovic in the last 16, did not face a single break point against a game but limited opponent. The former world number one awaits the winner of a later first-round match between Italian Andreas Seppi and Agustin Calleri of Argentina. Djokovic is in action later on Tuesday when he faces Dutchman Robin Haase. Andy Roddick and David Nalbandian also play their first-round matches.
