Kapil sacked over Indian league

Kapil Dev has been sacked as chairman of India's national cricket academy for refusing to give up his involvement in the rebel Indian Cricket League.

The ICL, a Twenty20 series, is being launched this year, and has already attracted the likes of Inzamam-ul-Haq, Brian Lara and Lance Klusener.

Former India captain Kapil was named on its executive board in May.

A cricket board spokesman said: "We have expelled Kapil Dev and all players and officials who are with the ICL."

Kapil, who led India to glory in the 1983 World Cup, had dared the Indian board to sack him, insisting he was doing nothing wrong by promoting cricket.

And he appeared unconcerned by the sacking, taking the opportunity to once again criticise the board's opposition of the league.

"There is nothing surprising with the board's action. This is how they have been functioning for the last 70 years," he told Aaj Tak television channel.

"They have never thought it fit to talk to any player. There is disappointment I will not be able to interact with the young boys."

Sandip Patil, Madan Lal and Balwinder Sandhu, team-mates of his in that 1983 side, have also signed coaching deals with the ICL.

And former Test wicket-keeper Kiran More - who was recently chairman of selectors - resigned as secretary of the Baroda Cricket Association to join the new league.
