Leo-Latu banned for racist abuse

Wakefield hooker Tevita Leo-Latu has been banned for six games by the Rugby Football League after making a racist remark to Warrington's Kevin Penny.

The 26-year-old New Zealander was found guilty of conduct prejudicial and racial abuse in a game at the Halliwell Jones stadium on 17 June.

Penny reported the incident to a touch judge and it was subsequently investigated by the RFL.

Leo-Latu, who joined from Cronulla last year, has until 22 August to appeal.

RFL executive chairman Richard Lewis said the ban showed the sport takes racist incidents very seriously.

"Racism will not be tolerated in any form in rugby league," he said.

"Through our 'Tackle It' campaign which we launched in 2006 we asked for clubs to adopt a policy of zero tolerance of racism in any form.

"Clubs have been asked to make a commitment to ensure that players, spectators, staff and volunteers can enjoy an environment free of discrimination and racism.

"As shown in this case should anyone break this commitment they will be punished."
