Hunter Mahan held off a stellar field and the likes of Tiger Woods to snatch the early lead on the first day of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio. The relatively unknown American, 25, fired six birdies on a difficult day's play but was held back by a bogey and double bogey to finish three under.
World number one Woods finished well placed, though, a shot back in second.
England's Justin Rose finished on one under, while Colin Montgomerie lay four shots off the lead on one over.
