Robinson under threat after error

England coach Steve McClaren refused to rule out a change of goalkeeper for the autumn Euro 2008 qualifiers after Paul Robinson's latest blunder.

Robinson was at fault for Germany's equaliser in England's 2-1 defeat.

After the loss at Wembley, McClaren said: "I can't say who will be in the team in three weeks. He's disappointed - all keepers are when they concede.

"But he has got to bounce back. He has had disappointments before but he has just got to get on with it."

England took the lead against their old rivals at Wembley through a Frank Lampard strike but Kevin Kuranyi was gifted an equaliser when Robinson spilled a Bernd Schneider cross.

Robinson was replaced by the recalled David James at the interval, although McClaren said he had always planned to give each keeper a half each.

But the England coach refused to confirm Robinson would be his first choice for September's Wembley qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

He added: "We have got to look at the situation and see how people bounce back from that."

Robinson came under fire last year after allowing a Gary Neville backpass to beat him in the defeat by Croatia.

He has remained McClaren's number one, despite not being at his best.

England skipper John Terry refused to blame Robinson's error for his country's failure to see off the Germans.

Both McClaren and Chelsea defender Terry conceded England were made to pay for defensive errors.

"I'm sure Robbo can speak about his error but I could have done a lot better and cleared the ball for their second goal," stated Terry.

"It was two sloppy goals, I gave away possession too easily in a silly position when I should have just cleared it upfield.

"They didn't have many chances and we gifted them the goals.

"But it's important we stay together as a team because we have got two massive games coming up - we need to work hard and trust each other."

Despite the defeat McClaren felt the game would serve as a perfect warm-up for their upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers.

"That was a tough game against a good German side and it was a great game for us in preparation for the next two games," he said.

"We gave the ball away in silly areas and we got punished for that.

"But I was pleased with the amount of chances we created and we played some good football."

Former skipper David Beckham made it through the full 90 minutes, despite his recent ankle problems.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder will return to the United States on Thursday and hopes to play a part in their game the same day.

He said: "It was nice to get the minutes. In the last nine weeks I have only played two games and trained three times. The ankle is still a bit sore but it was nice to be out there.

"The way you can travel these days I can sleep whenever I want and, for me, it's not a problem.

"It has not affected me yet and I'll carry on playing for my country.

"I got a knock on my ankle and it has slightly swelled up again but I'm planning on playing in the Galaxy's next game."

McClaren said of his former captain: "As long as he performs like that he will be in."
