Rahul Dravid has resigned as captain of India, the BBC understands. He informed the Board of Control of his decision only hours before India's match against Pakistan at the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa.
Dravid opted out of the tournament, along with Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, but his decision will come as a huge surprise to Indian fans.
He took over as skipper in October 2005 and recently led the team to a 1-0 Test series victory in England.
