Papps returns to Kiwi's squad

Opening batsman Michael Papps returns to New Zealand's 15-man squad for the two-Test series in South Africa.

Papps, who has played in just six Tests since his 2004 debut, is set to partner Craig Cumming as selectors search for a successful opening partnership.

Ross Taylor and Mark Gillespie could make their debuts after impressing in the one-day arena but Lou Vincent and Craig McMillan are notable omissions.

Stephen Fleming remains in a side that will be captained by Daniel Vettori.

Pace bowler Kyle Mills returns after recovering from a serious knee injury, but all rounder James Franklin misses out with a knee injury of his own.

New Zealand coach John Bracewell said: "The selectors are looking to create a quality opening partnership.

"Cumming is the incumbent and is acknowledged as a quality player of pace, while Papps is being rewarded for an excellent domestic season."

New Zealand squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Shane Bond, Craig Cumming, Stephen Fleming, Mark Gillespie, Peter Fulton, Chris Martin, Michael Mason, Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Michael Papps, Jeetan Patel, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor.
