PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson was taken off the field on a motorized cart during the sixth inning of a game against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday night with an apparent head injury.

Wilson collided headfirst with second baseman Matt Kata just beyond the infield dirt as the two were going after a ground ball hit up the middle by the Cardinals' So Taguchi and immediately appeared to lose consciousness.
Wilson was down on the field for more than five minutes while being attended to by the Pirates' medical staff. He was sitting up and conscious as he was being driven off the field but appeared groggy.
Wilson was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. There was no further word on his condition.
Wilson was playing his third consecutive game after not playing since Sept. 18 due to tightness in his right hamstring and his wife giving birth. He had been hitting better than .400 in his past 46 games.
Cesar Izturis replaced Wilson at shortstop for the Pirates.
