As the St. Louis Cardinals make what a month ago would have seemed like an improbable run to a playoff berth, their road will be hampered without the services of third baseman Scott Rolen.
| GM | HR | RBI | R | OBP | AVG |
| 112 | 8 | 58 | 55 | .331 | .265 |
According to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rolen will meet with team officials in the next few days to discuss options for his ailing left shoulder. One team official said the club isn't expecting Rolen to play the rest of this season.
Rolen echoed those sentiments.
"I am not the man for this job right now," Rolen told the Post-Dispatch. "I ran it to my limit and I have nothing left. I have to make a change. I'm no longer the everyday third baseman anymore."
The Cardinals also lost outfielder Juan Encarnacion for the remainder of the season and his career is in jeopardy after sustaining multiple fractures of his left eye socket when struck by a foul ball Friday night.
Surgery at some point seems to be a certainty for Rolen, who is hitting .265 with eight homers and 58 RBIs in 392 at-bats this season.
"It's not a question of if he'll need surgery, it's when," Cardinals' team doctor George Paletta told the paper. "We are in complete agreement with what needs to take place. All that has to be discussed now is when the ideal time is to do it."
The expected recovery time for Rolen's potential surgery would be two to three months.
