Roger Clemens, who missed his last scheduled start because of an aching elbow, is on track to start against the Red Sox on Sunday night, in the final game of the New York Yankees' three-game weekend series in Boston.
Clemens had a cortisone shot in his elbow and has thrown three light side sessions in the last week. He will throw in a heavier bullpen session on Thursday. The Yankees expect that if he comes through that without any unexpected problems, he'll take the ball against the Red Sox in what may well be the last regular-season start of his career in Fenway Park. Although Clemens won't make a final decision about whether to retire until the offseason, many friends and associates say they expect this to be the last season of the right-hander's historic career. It's possible, of course, that the Yankees and Red Sox could meet in the playoffs, and Clemens, who began his 24-year career with the Red Sox, could again pitch against Boston in October. Clemens, 45, will probably have two more regular-season starts after facing the Red Sox, assuming he has no setbacks. Buster Olney is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.Source: ESPN.com
