SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Demetrius Jones started at quarterback for Notre Dame against Georgia Tech on Saturday, finally ending the suspense of who would replace four-year starter Brady Quinn.
Jones, a sophomore, was the No. 3 quarterback last season and ran the scout team. He didn't play last season but led the Irish out of the tunnel alongside linebacker Maurice Crum before the game Saturday. He is the best runner of the three finalists for the job, and rushed for 7 yards on the first play. Jones beat out junior Evan Sharpley and highly touted freshman Jimmy Clausen.
Sharpley was Quinn's backup last season, throwing two passes and completing one, and Clausen underwent arthroscopic surgery in the spring to have bone spurs removed from the elbow on his throwing arm.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis had kept his selection quiet to force Georgia Tech to prepare for different styles of quarterback and to try to keep pressure off his selection.
