The final sees an Argentine take on a South African on the same day that their respective nations meet in a semi-final of the rugby union World Cup in France. Cabrera and Els have met twice before in the competition, with one victory per player. "He got me last year," Els told BBC Sport. "He is going to be a tough opponent." The 37-year-old Cabrera shot nine birdies and two eagles over the 35 holes played in his semi-final. Cabrera, who defeated defending champion Paul Casey on Friday, said: "I am really delighted. "I played some of my best golf. Hunter came back strong and it was a tight match and I am pleased to have won." Cabrera led from the second hole and it looked as though he would record a comfortable win when he moved six ahead after four holes of the afternoon round. But Mahan chipped away it Cabrera's advantage and with two holes to play had reduced the Argentine's lead to two strokes. Mahan sunk a 10-footer but Cabrera held his nerve to putt from a similar distance and book his place in the final. Stenson had birdied the last to take the lead in the morning after a round that had seen him one up three times, only for Els to square the match on each occasion.
Els had beaten Colin Montgomerie and Andres Romero in the first two rounds but had a difficult time on the greens in the morning round against Stenson. The world number five three-putted to fall behind on the short second and had chances to level on every green from the fifth to the 10th, but was unable to take any of them. However, the six-time winner of the tournament was in top form in the second half of his semi-final contest. And after taking the lead for the first time in the tie at the seventh hole, Els never looked back. Els missed a putt to seal victory at the 16th but Stenson missed from a similar distance. "When I got my nose in front I felt relieved and free again," added Els after his victory. "I struck the ball nice on the front nine but then hit a bad tee shot at the 10th. After that I ground it out. "The putter saved the day in the afternoon - I could not buy a putt during the morning round."
