Jones 'gives up Olympic medals'

Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones has returned her Olympic medals, according to news agency Reuters.

In a tearful address in a New York court last week, Jones admitted taking steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) in preparation for the 2000 Olympics.

The 31-year-old won five medals - three gold and two bronzes - in Sydney.

Jones, who was cleared of taking the banned erythropoietin in 2006, has now announced her retirement from international athletics.

New York attorney Henry DePippo, who represents Jones, confirmed in a telephone call that the medals had been returned, according to Reuters.

Last week, IAAF president Lamine Diack said Jones will be remembered as "a fraud".

"If she had trusted to her own natural gifts and allied them to self-sacrifice and hard work I sincerely believe that she could have been an honest champion at the Sydney Games," he said.

"Now, instead, she will be remembered as one of the biggest frauds in sporting history."
