Pakistan 140-4 v South Africa 357

South Africa finished day two of the final Test against Pakistan on top after reducing the hosts to 140-4.

The tourists were bowled out for 357, with Danish Kaneria claiming 4-114 after Mark Boucher (54) and Paul Harris (46) shared 88 for the eighth wicket.

Salman Butt (40) and Kamran Akmal (52) quickly put on 90 in reply but Pakistan then lost four wickets for 33 runs.

Former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, in his last game for his country, was there on 10 when bad light halted play early.

Pakistan made the ideal start in the morning when Andre Nel gloved the fifth ball from Umar Gul (3-103) to short-leg before the Proteas could add to their overnight 259-6.

But Harris displayed just the sort of resilience his team wanted as they look to achieve their first subcontinent series win outside Bangladesh since 2000.

He was struck on the left side of his head after ducking into a bouncer from paceman Mohammad Asif but batted on bravely, mixing solid defence with some cheeky shots to make his highest Test score.

Boucher showed enough confidence in him to allow him to share the strike and saw his partner overtake him before Harris drove Gul to cover to end his 132-ball knock.

Dale Steyn was bowled round his legs by a sharp leg-break from Danish Kaneria (4-114) and Boucher was caught on the long-on boundary off Kaneria after reaching his fify with a top-edged hook for six off Gul.

Butt, who hit Steyn for four boundaries in an over costing 19 runs, began at a rapid pace with Akmal, who crashed three fours in one Makhaya Ntini over.

However, Butt top-edged a sweep off Harris to Graeme Smith at short fine-leg and Akmal was snapped up by the South Africa skipper at cover off the slow left-armer.

In between those dismissals Younus Khan was bowled by one that Nel nipped back in and Inzamam was given a guard of honour by the tourists when he walked in to a mini-crisis.

He soon lost Mohammad Yousuf, trapped lbw by one from Steyn that kept low, and will need to call on all his years of experience to prevent his farewell turning into a desperate survival battle for his team.
