Loss ends Robredo's Shanghai bid

Marcos Baghdatis beat Tommy Robredo in the Paris Masters quarter-finals to end the Spaniard's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending Masters Cup.

Robredo started the day in the eighth and last qualifying position in the race for Shanghai, but lost 6-4 6-4.

That means the winner of a later quarter-final between Britain's Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet of France will overtake the Spaniard.

Cypriot Baghdatis needs to win the tournament to qualify for Shanghai.

In Friday's second match, David Nalbandian followed up his victory over Roger Federer with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 win over Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer.

The Argentine now faces the winner of Murray or Gasquet, but he cannot qualify for Shanghai because of their progress in Paris.

Mikhail Youzhny, the only other player who can still qualify for the Masters Cup, faces Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Murray's match against home favourite Gasquet is the last quarter-final of the day.
