Rossi injured in qualifying crash

Valentino Rossi broke three bones in his right hand and is unlikely to race in the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix after a heavy crash in qualifying.

The 28-year-old Italian lost control of his Yamaha after the first curve at the Ricardo Tormo circuit and was eventually thrown off into the gravel.

He walked away from the crash but his bike was almost totally destroyed.

"It is going to be very difficult for him to ride this weekend," said Yamaha team director Davide Brivio.

Rossi needed a point to guarantee finishing as runner-up in the championship for the second season in a row.

He has not finished outside the top two in any class since his rookie season in the 125cc category in 1996.

Australian Casey Stoner has already clinched the title and is chasing his 11th win of the season in Valencia.
