Source: Mattingly, Bowa set for Torre's L.A. staff

LOS ANGELES -- Don Mattingly may be named as the Los Angeles Dodgers' hitting coach after Joe Torre takes over the reins at a news conference Monday, according to a source cited by 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.

Mattingly was the Yankees' bench coach under Torre last season. He was the hitting coach for three seasons before that.

The Dodgers have a news conference scheduled today at Dodger Stadium to introduce Torre (SportsCenter Special, 1 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Mattingly isn't the only former Yankee coach headed west with Torre. Larry Bowa told Marchand this morning that he'll be with the Dodgers, either as Torre's bench coach or third base coach. He was the Yankees' third-base coach last season.

Bowa had been rumored to be ticketed for a coaching position with the Seattle Mariners.

Torre agreed to a three-year, $13 million contract to become the Dodgers' manager last Thursday.

"Joe Torre comes with a great resume," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on a conference call with reporters last week. "What he's done the last 12 years is as powerful as any manager in recent memory."

Torre guided the Yankees to four World Series championships from 1996-2000, and they made the playoffs in all 12 years he managed them. New York lost to Cleveland last month, eliminated in the Division Series for the third straight year.

Following that defeat, the Yankees offered Torre a one-year contract with a pay cut. He earned $7.5 million last season -- more than any other big league manager by far.
