Kandy, 1-5 December 2007
England seamer Matthew Hoggard had to leave the field during the fourth day of the first Test against Sri Lanka because of a lower back injury. Hoggard had taken 2-55 off 18 overs during Sri Lanka's second innings before having to go off for treatment just after lunch. England's most experienced bowler, who had a similar problem last summer, was unable to take to the field after tea. He could now be a doubt for the second Test, starting in Colombo on Sunday. Fellow paceman Steve Harmison, who was left out of the team after suffering a back complaint during a warm-up game, could return for the second Test in Colombo on Saturday.
