Spurs angered by Keane treatment

Tottenham will write to the Football Association to express their anger at the way Robbie Keane's red card appeal was dealt with.

Keane failed in his attempt to overturn the three-game ban received after his sending off against Birmingham.

And Spurs officials are furious that their captain was not given the opportunity for a hearing.

"The justification for upholding the referee decision makes no sense to us," said club secretary John Alexander.

Keane, 27, was sent off by referee Phil Dowd for a tackle on Fabrice Muamba but Tottenham argued that the decision was harsh and that Dowd appeared to consult with the fourth official before producing a red card.

He added: "If Robbie had been given an opportunity to attend - the current rules do not give him any opportunity to attend at the hearing of his appeal - we believe that the verdict would have been different."

The striker's three-game ban will see him miss Premier League games against Manchester City and Portsmouth and the Carling Cup tie against Sven-Goran Eriksson's side.

"I'm convinced it was not a red card," said Spurs assistant manager Gus Poyet after Sunday's game.

"We know the referee asked the fourth official for his view but he was only a few yards from the ball.
