USA take record Davis Cup victory

The USA secured a record 32nd Davis Cup title after Bob and Mike Bryan's doubles win gave them an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Russia in the final.

The brothers defeated Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 6-2 in front of a noisy home crowd at Portland's Memorial Coliseum.

James Blake and Andy Roddick had given the home side a 2-0 lead after Friday's opening singles ties.

It was the USA's first Davis Cup final win for 12 years.

The Bryans, winners of five Grand Slam titles together, had lost just one doubles match in 13 Davis Cup appearances going into Saturday's game.

The first set proved tight but the American duo edged it on the tie-break and then broke their opponents once in the second set to take a commanding lead in the match.

There was to be no way back for the Russians with Davydenko broken twice in the third set in the third and seventh games and they sealed the win with a determined volley.

"Since 2003 our mission was to win the Davis Cup but I never imagined we would win it in front of a home crowd," said a delighted Bob Bryan.

"We knew the tie-break at the end of the first set would be crucial because it is hard to break on this court.

"But we can die happy - our careers are set."
