Argentina's hopes of beating Spain to win the Davis Cup have been hit by the loss of world number nine Juan Martin del Potro because of a thigh injury.

With Argentina trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five tie in Mar del Plata, Del Potro had been due to face David Ferrer in Sunday's opening reverse singles.

The 20-year-old is replaced by Jose Acasuso, while Spain have swapped the off-form Ferrer with Fernando Verdasco.

Del Potro picked up the injury during his loss to Feliciano Lopez on Friday.

"I could have gone out and tried but I didn't want to risk having to pull out after a few games," said Del Potro, who was beaten 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 by Lopez.

Ranked 48th in the world, the 26-year-old Acasuso has won five out of seven singles rubbers in the Davis Cup.

Ferrer was outclassed by David Nalbandian in Friday's opening singles while Verdasco, ranked 16 in the world, was in fine form as he helped Lopez to a 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri in Saturday's doubles rubber.
