Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe will be out for a month if he decides to have surgery on the calf problem that has been troubling him for three games.

The 26-year-old, who limped out of England's 2-1 midweek win in Germany at half-time and missed Pompey's draw with Hull, will see a specialist on Monday.

"Another England player had a similar problem and required surgery to sort it out," he told the Sunday Mirror.

"It's a minor operation but means I'll be absent for at least four weeks."

Defoe is Pompey's leading scorer with seven goals in all competitions this season and has formed a profitable partnership up front with Peter Crouch, who has scored six times.

But he said: "I've been suffering for the past three games with the calf injury and it's got to the stage that when I play, I can't feel my foot because of the numbness.

"I have had treatment including acupuncture but it's showing no signs of clearing up."
