Joe Kinnear has signed a contract as manager of Newcastle United until the end of the season.

He arrived at St James' Park as interim boss in September and will now stay for another six months as owner Mike Ashley continues to try to sell the club.

"Ever since I came to Newcastle, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience," said Kinnear, who was a controversial choice as Magpies manager.

He has already twice found himself in trouble with the Football Association.

The 61-year-old was warned by the FA after swearing 52 times during a furious attack on the media during one of his early press conferences.

On Thursday, Kinnear was charged with improper conduct after calling referee Martin Atkinson "Mickey Mouse" following a 2-1 defeat at Fulham on 9 November.

But he says he is enjoying the challenge at Newcastle after stepping in for the departed Kevin Keegan, having won two games, drawn four and lost two in his eight games in charge.

"The players have been great to work with and the fans have made me feel at home since day one," added the former Wimbledon, Luton and Nottingham Forest boss.

"We have a big challenge ahead of us for the rest of the season, but together, I'm confident we will make good progress.

"We have some very good players already at this club and hopefully we can further strengthen the squad in January, and I will be working very closely with the directors to try to achieve that."

Managing director Derek Llambias said: "Joe has done an excellent job since coming to the club, and everyone is delighted he has agreed to remain in charge for the rest of the season."

Newcastle face a north-east derby against Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Saturday.
