Laviolette was unable to sustain the Hurricanes' success

The Carolina Hurricanes have fired head coach Peter Laviolette and named former boss Paul Maurice as his replacement.
The Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup in 2006 under Laviolette but have failed to make the NHL play-offs in the last two seasons.
They have lost four of their last five games and are second in the Southeast division with a 12-11-2 record.
Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said: "We have a team that that is not playing with the confidence it needs."
Laviolette, who turns 44 on 7 December, who coached the New York Islanders for two years, was in his fifth season with Carolina.
He also led the US men's team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
He had two-and-a-half years left on the five-year contract he signed in June 2006 shortly after winning the Stanley Cup.
Laviolette's 244 career wins are five more than former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella as the most in NHL history by an American-born coach.
