The Detroit Lions became the first NFL team to go 0-16 for the season after losing 31-21 to the Green Bay Packers.
The Lions had already sealed the league's worst-ever season at 0-15 with last Sunday's loss to New Orleans.
They join the 1976 Tampa Buccaneers, who went 0-14, as the only winless teams in the Super Bowl era.
In 1978, the league expanded to a 16-game season, paving the way for the Lions' unwanted achievement in the 2008 NFL campaign.
The Lions showed some intensity in their attempt to avoid ignominy, rallying twice from behind to enter the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field with the score level at 14-14.
But Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers threw for two more touchdowns, adding to his first earlier in the game, to seal Detroit's fate.
The Lions have now lost 23 of their last 24 games. Their last win came on 23 December 2007, when they beat Kansas City.
Minnesota and Carolina grabbed division titles on last-second field goals on the concluding day of the NFL regular season.
Ryan Longwell notched a 50-yard effort with five seconds left to beat the visiting New York Giants 20-19 and earn the Vikings the NFC North crown.
Carolina sealed the NFC South title with a 33-31 win at New Orleans on John Kasay's 42-yarder with a second to play.
