Scholes has missed more than two months with a knee injury
|
Veteran Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes could make a surprise return in Wednesday's Carling Cup quarter-final against Blackburn.
Scholes has been out since September with a knee injury but could be named on the bench, while Carlos Tevez and Ben Foster are both expected to start.
Under-fire Blackburn boss Paul Ince has defender Martin Olsson available after serving a one-match ban.
Keith Andrews is cup-tied, while David Dunn and Steven Reid are out.
Ince is looking for his side to put their disappointing Premier League form to one side as they search for a first win since beating Sunderland 2-1 in the last round of the Carling Cup on 12 November.
Blackburn have slipped into the relegation zone after failing to win in their last nine Premier League games.
But Ince has rubbished reports suggesting that he is under pressure after just five months in charge at Ewood Park.
Ince welcomes League Cup 'distraction'
"There are people trying to tear this club apart and it's bang out of order," he said.
"People want us to fail, to not do well, to not succeed, and to not stay up. But that gives me and my players the strength to prove people wrong, and now we have to start doing that.
"(Chairman) John Williams, has done nothing but back me.
"We all know where we are, but we also know we've got games to rectify that. As long as you've the support of the chairman, that's all that matters."
Ince may well have his former United team-mate Scholes to contend with at some stage in the game.
The 34-year-old underwent knee surgery after damaging his knee ligaments against Aalborg in the Champions League at the end of September.
"I have Paul Scholes in mind," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
"He is on the verge of playing again following his operation. He is training well and chomping at the bit to get started.

I intend to stay with the young ones who have got us this far

But Scholes is likely to be one of the few experienced players on show for United.
"Although we are now into the quarter-finals, I intend to stay with the young ones who have got us this far," added Ferguson.
"Players like Jonny Evans, Rafael, Darron Gibson, Rodrigo Possebon and Danny Welbeck will all be involved."
United midfielder Darren Fletcher says Ferguson's decision to make changes will benefit the whole squad.
"There could be 15 senior players not involved but we will all turn up and cheer the other lads on," he said.

Foster is one of the players who - if selected ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak - is determined to make the most of a rare start.
"I have got to take any chance that I am given," the 25-year-old said.
"I just have to get my head down and keep doing the same things in training.
"Then if my chance comes along, hopefully I will be ready to take it."
