Tail-ender Jerome Taylor hit a maiden century as West Indies fought back on day four of the rain-hit first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin.
Taylor, whose previous highest first-class score was 40, hit 17 fours and three sixes before falling for 106.
The 24-year-old fast bowler faced 107 balls and put on 153 for the seventh wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Daniel Vettori took 6-56 to dismiss West Indies for 340 and his side reached 44-2 at stumps to lead by 69.
"I don't think I have words to express my feelings. It is a prestigious feeling at the moment," said Taylor, whose side started the day on 39-0 in reply to New Zealand's 365.
"The coaches told me I had the potential to get a big Test score.
"I was working on it and it was the sort of pitch that, once you got in, it got easier. I tried to make as much use of the opportunity," he added.
The youngster came to the wicket on 173-6 following a collapse sparked when opener Chris Gayle fell for an entertaining 74.
Taylor, who dominated his partnership with the experienced Chanderpaul, produced a mixture of fluent drives and improvised thrashes as he hit the Kiwi bowlers all around the ground.
He reached his ton off his 97th ball with his 16th boundary but was finally out when he edged Vettori behind to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.
Daren Powell went next ball to leave Vettori on a hat-trick but Fidel Edwards survived.
Chanderpaul was eventually last man out for 76 as Vettori claimed the final four wickets for 14 runs to notch up his 18th five-wicket haul in Tests.
Powell bowled Jamie How and night-watchman Kyle Mills with successive balls but missed out on a hat-trick when Daniel Flynn stood firm.
