Fans rush for NFL Wembley tickets

New England players celebrate
New England have won three of the last seven Super Bowls

Tickets for the NFL's third competitive game at Wembley have sold more quickly than the previous two, with 20,000 snapped up in the first seven minutes.

The initial 70,000 allocation has gone and another batch is only available until after Sunday's Super Bowl XLIII.

"It is proof of a growing audience for the sport," said NFL UK managing director Alistair Kirkwood.

New England and Tampa Bay, who play at Wembley on 25 October, have won four of the past seven Super Bowls.

The Patriots are the best-supported team among NFL fans in the UK.

And the Buccaneers - owned by the Glazer family, who also own Premier League football club Manchester United - have the oldest official fan club in the UK.

"We have been delighted with the way fans have got behind the game, especially considering the challenging economic climate," added Kirkwood.

Once the latest allocation has sold out, fans of the competing teams will have their opportunity to purchase tickets, with another general admission sale anticipated in September.

Tampa Bay plays host to Super Bowl XLIII, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, on Sunday.

In October 2007, the NFL staged its first regular-season game outside the Americas, with 81,176 fans watching the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 before going on to win Super Bowl XLI.

Last year, the New Orleans Saints were 37-32 winners in a thrilling meeting with the San Diego Chargers, watched by 83,226.

Once general sales close on Sunday, hospitality packages will be available and tickets will be allocated to fans in the United States before a final release of spare tickets in September.
