0042: David Law and Alistair Eykyn of 5 Live fame have been in touch from Rod Laver Arena.... "The locals here are getting rather over-excited about this lad Bernard Tomic. We have the ABC Australian Radio station in the commentary box next door and were looking forward to getting our own back for last year when, after Murray had been knocked out by Tsonga while Britain was asleep on the opening day, they were heard to report to their listeners with great gusto: "The BBC boys next door are devastated! MURRAY IS OUT BEFORE BREAKFAST!'"

Just reading that last line has made my blood boil.

0039: "I've got a 2 and a half hour maths exam 2moro, which goes to 80 per cent of my final grade but i'm not going to bed til i know how djokovic's done."

0035: Ivanovic makes the breakthrough with a sortie to the net and leads Brianti 3-1, but the early news is coming on the Hisense Arena where Makarova now has a double break against third seed Safina. I am preparing the tantrum graphic.

The sun is out again in Melbourne
0030: My colleague Ollie Williams - very much Schwank to my Calleri - has pointed out a claim that on-court temperatures exceeded 60C yesterday. We have two questions: a) is this possible? And b) does that mean you could fry an egg on the baseline?

0024: "Calleri & Schwank - double trouble. Er, punk." How's that? Yes, anyway, Ivanovic comes through a tough game to lead 2-1 on serve but Ekaterina Makarova has broken Safina on the Hisense Arena. And Cilic is a break up on Tipsarevic.

0021: "I'm sat up late in the cold watching over this live text in herefordshire cheering on janko tipsarevic! Come on janko!!"

0020: "Darn it, i was just in shepherd's bush. Could have joined you for a night cap and djokovic baiting. Any ideas for a calleri & schwank tag line?"

0018: She hasn't looked too confident recently and struggled in her opening match but Ivanovic gets off to a flyer here with a love hold.

0016: According to the BBC weather website it's a paltry 23C in Melbourne today. I'm tempted to put the rain graphic up, the locals must be rooting around for their hats and gloves after yesterday, which Serena Williams described as "extreme". We're under way on Rod Laver Arena...

0010: "It's much better than yesterday," the umpire says to Ivanovic as the pair discuss the temperature before the knock-up. Other early starters today are Russians Dinara Safina and Nadia Petrova, and a decent looking match on Court Two between Marin Cilic and Janko Tipsarevic.

0005: Ana Ivanovic and Alberta Brianti make their way out onto a sun-drenched Rod Laver Arena. The Italian gets a polite round of applause befitting the world number 169. Fifth seed Ivanovic gets some heartier cheers and a few whistles.

It's good news for a Briton in Melbourne

2358: There is no British interest in the singles tonight as Scotland's Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha enjoy a well-earned day off, but Ross Hutchins is in action in the doubles later out on Court 11. Hutchins has wisely teamed up with an Aussie, Stephen Huss, and the pair take on 1970s San Francisco-based maverick cops Calleri and Schwank.

The sun is out again in Melbourne

2352: I can confirm that it is sunny in Melbourne. Very sunny. Since I went to bed this morning we've got a new President of the US, Jermaine Pennant has decided he does like Portsmouth after all, and Kelly Brook has been booted off Britain's Got Ice Factor. And I've just seen Chuck D on Newsnight. What a world. I'm backing Ana Ivanovic and Alberta Brianti to top the lot when play starts on Rod Laver Arena in a few minutes.

2345: Good day, as the locals would say, and welcome to a mouthwatering day three at Melbourne Park (via Shepherds Bush). We have a fantastic line-up overnight, so much so that we will be showing two matches live on the Red Button and this website - Novak Djokovic v Jeremy Chardy followed by Roger Federer v Evgeny Korolev. They will then be replayed from 0830 GMT, at which point 5 Live sports extra will kick in too.
