By Piers Newbery

0045: "One for the statisticians... Never in the open era have all top 8 seeds reached the quarter finals of a major. Could we see history over the next two days? Certainly looks like the top 4 will make the semis!"
Drew from london via text on 81111

0043: One fabulous backhand return helps Bartoli to a couple of set points but she snatches at them and Jankovic avoids the bagel... just. The applause from the crowd sounds vaguely mocking and Jankovic is not her usual smiley self.

0038: Bartoli battles back from 04-40 to hold serve and go 5-0 clear, and Jankovic is all over the shop at the moment. In fairness, former Wimbledon finalist Bartoli is looking in great form and thumping everything with great confidence.

0035: "I fancy Cilic to down Del Potro tonight. Great to see Andrei Pavel still going strong in the doubles. Getting the coffee on now!"
From Jon Shaw, Luton, via text on 81111

0034: "The mens R4 is such high quality, a few unsurprising upsets are surely on the cards. Most of the matches could go either way, except federer who's comfortably in the quarters given his matchup."
From Aliah... staying up again... via text on 81111

0032: Jankovic is broken again and she doesn't look too comfortable out on Rod Laver at the moment. She trails 4-0, while Del Potro and Cilic are 2-2.

Fernando Gonzalez
0029: "Piers are there any highlights of Gonzo's epic win on the site anywhere?"
From Josh via text on 81111

- There aren't I'm afraid but we do have Murray and Nadal's matches linked off the relevant reports. If it were up to me we'd build a statue of Gonzo, he's a ruddy legend.

0024: Bartoli gets an early break against Jankovic to lead 3-0, and Del Potro misses two break points against Cilic to leave them on serve at 2-1 to the Croatian.

Kettle

0023: "Have had a truly (bad*) day but now v excited that u showed my text...is that sad? ps Ollie is clearly mentally ill - who doesn't drink tea?!?"

It's good news for a Briton in Melbourne

0022: "Well since Laura played last week I'd say she's fine, as are Heather and Hannah who are both playing tonight and need our support. Heather is top ten seed after all.. "
From Steve via text

0019: Bartoli and Cilic hold serve as the two main matches get under way.

0016: "Evening piers. We have got a boy in juniors. James chaudry. He's in bottom half of draw."
From Jason in London via text on 81111

- Rats. Apologies for that error, it's my failing eyesight.

0013: "Hi Piers, your live text has helped me survive through the working week but I'm really hoping Federer's match will be on red button later...?"
From anon via text on 81111

- Ah, sorry about that. The Red Button matches will be those involving Dokic and then Djokovic from 0830 GMT. Rest assured, I will keep you up to speed with all things Federer and I've seen him play Berdych enough times to be fairly confident it will be a straight-sets win for the Swiss.

0009: The players are out on Rod Laver Arena, Jankovic sticking with her bright green number and Bartoli wearing... well, tennis clothes. We're through the toss and into the knock-up and Jelena has yet to call for the trainer, so it's going well so far.

Laura Robson

0006: "Evening Piers, hope u got someone to make u tea. I noticed that Laura Robson is still in the junior open so all is not lost for womens tennis!"
From Fiona, Redditch, via text on 81111

- I continue to make my own hot beverages as my colleague Ollie Williams "doesn't drink tea". I know. And, yes, Laura Robson is in the draw so presumably she is over the stomach muscle injury that threatened her participation. Although to be honest, it's not women's tennis we need to worry about so much.

It's good news for a Briton in Melbourne

0001: And do not think for one moment that Andy Murray's day off means we are a Brit-free zone. Brother Jamie is back in action and hoping to kick-start his season alongside American Liezel Huber - they take on Aussies Chris Guccione and Sophie Ferguson in the mixed doubles. And as the junior events begin we have Heather Watson and Hannah James in the girls' singles. Wimbledon junior champ Laura Robson is seeded fifth but does not play today, while there is not a single British boy in that draw - disappointing.

2357: As for the women, it's all a bit.... odd. Very hard to pick a winner so far but today features the top half of the draw, with top seed Jelena Jankovic opening on Rod Laver Arena against Marion Bartoli, followed by Dinara Safina against Alize Cornet. But the feature match is very much Aussie battler Jelena Dokic against Alisa Kleybanova, which kicks off the night session. You can follow that match and Novak Djokovic v Marcos Baghdatis on the Red Button, this website and 5 Live sports extra from 0830 GMT.

2353: Today we see the start of the last-16 matches in the men's and women's singles, with potential crackers everywhere you look.

On the men's side we open with up-and-comers Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic, building up to Novak Djokovic against Marcos Baghdatis in the night match. Throw in Roger Federer against Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick against Tommy Robredo in the meantime and that's a pretty good night/day ahead.

Andy Murray
2348: I've just seen the last game of this morning's Gonzalez v Gasquet epic. You've got to love Gonzo, smacking a backhand down the line on match point to win 12-10 in the fifth. Is it me or is this whole tournament shaping up to be a bit of a classic? The big boys are all bristling with form and intention, with Britain's own Andy Murray very much among them. When I left work this morning he was 4-4 and battling with Jurgen Melzer, by the time I got home he had his feet up in the locker room and was probably gorging on sushi.

The sun is out again in Melbourne

2345: The sun is beating down mercilessly on the Rod Laver Arena - I don't know why we bothered with a rain graphic - and we are just 15 minutes from the start of day seven. I don't know about you but I feel refreshed and ready to get stuck in.
