Lyle downcast over Cup decision

Sandy Lyle has admitted to feeling "disappointed" after being overlooked for the 2010 Ryder Cup captaincy.

The job of leading Europe against the United States at Celtic Manor in Wales went to Colin Montgomerie, who had initially been one of Lyle's backers.

"Although I am disappointed personally, I am genuinely delighted for Colin who has my congratulations and support.

"Colin will be an excellent captain, I wish him every success in leading the European team to victory," said Lyle.

The 50-year-old former Open and US Masters champion is the only one of Europe's 'famous five' of the 1980s not to have been made captain, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam all having enjoyed the honour.

But he no longer plays on the main European Tour and members of the European Ryder Cup committee may have felt he was out of touch with the candidates for next year's team.

However, Lyle was assistant to Woosnam for Europe's 2006 win at the K Club in Ireland and could be given a similar role in Montgomerie's back-up team, alongside Jose Maria Olazabal.

Europe will be looking to regain the trophy at Celtic Manor after Faldo's team lost 16 1/2-11 1/2 to Paul Azinger's US at Valhalla, Kentucky, last year, the first win for the Americans in the biennial event since 1999.
