Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal has put himself forward for the European captaincy at the 2010 Ryder Cup.
The 42-year-old, who had been hoping to qualify as a player, is the favourite for the post but Colin Montgomerie has also emerged as a strong contender.
Europe are set to name the new captain in Dubai on 29 January after delaying the decision for more than two weeks.
Other contenders for the captaincy at Celtic Manor in Wales are Sandy Lyle and 2006 captain Ian Woosnam.
