Pat Perez sealed his maiden PGA Tour title after winning the Bob Hope Classic in California by three shots.

The American, 32, carded a three-under 69 in the fifth and final round to finish 33 under overall, three shots ahead of nearest rival John Merrick.

Perez had been three shots behind overnight leader Steve Stricker, but a poor round of five-over 77 ended the Ryder Cup player's title ambitions.

Stricker finished on 28 under, alongside Canadian Mike Weir.

"Today, I knew that I was ready," said a delighted Perez.

"I prepared myself all week. I played all winter to get ready for this and it just means the world."

Having bogeyed the 17th, Merrick added: "I think I got a little quick.

"On the last three holes, I didn't go through my whole process like I was during the whole day, and that could have hurt me."

And having set the pace in Palm Springs on day three, Stricker admitted: "A couple of bad swings cost me big time.

"It was tough to judge the wind and to pick a correct club. But overall, if you would have told me I would have played like I did this week coming into the tournament, I still take a lot of positives away."
