Sunderland insist Diouf will stay

Diouf has not scored for Sunderland in 14 games this season

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia says striker El-Hadji Diouf will not be sold during the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move to Blackburn to team up with Sam Allardyce, who signed him while he was manager of Bolton.

"I have spoken to him (Diouf) in the last couple of days and he seems happy, they all seem happy," said Sbragia.

The Black Cats boss also insisted he would not allow strikers Michael Chopra and David Healy leave this month.

Senegal international Diouf starred in Sunderland's 2-1 win over Wanderers in the FA Cup third round and Sbragia said that is the kind of performance he expects consistently from Diouf.

"He set himself a standard and he has to keep to that standard. That's what I knew he could do from his time at Bolton."

Sbragia was quick to dismiss any speculation linking his other front men with moves away from Wearside.

Chopra spent two months on loan at Cardiff and scored five goals in 11 games in the Championship before the Sunderland manager called him back to the Stadium of Light.

Sbragia confirmed the 25-year-old would not be leaving: "Chopra will not be moving at all, I need four strikers and he is going to be one of the four."

"The front two, Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse, have done extremely well, but I need back-up as well and I will change the team around.

"The good thing about Chopra is he can play wide right, wide left and up front, there has been a lot of speculation, but I can't afford to lose my better players," he added.

If we have a problem with the front two regarding injury, we have two strikers who can go in and take their place

Northern Ireland forward Healy has been linked with a move away from the Black Cats with Rangers said to be monitoring his situation but Sbragia again gave any speculation short shrift.

"It is just speculation, I have had no contact with Rangers at all regarding David," said Sbragia.

"I spoke to David about three weeks ago and he is definitely part of the plan, he has been excellent, his attitude has been fantastic and we need strikers.

"If we have a problem with the front two regarding injury, we have two strikers who can go in and take their place." He added.
