Westwood tips Monty for captaincy

Lee Westwood says it would "make sense" for Colin Montgomerie to captain Europe at the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales, rather than Jose Maria Olazabal.

Six-time Ryder Cupper Westwood says Olazabal's popularity in America would make him an ideal captain in 2012.

The new captain is set to be named in Dubai on Thursday after a delay of more than two weeks.

"It would make sense to have Monty first time round and then Jose Maria in America," Westwood told Radio 5 Live.

"They'll make good captains because they've got experience and knowledge and are inspirational characters.

"Colin's career is known for how well he's played in the Ryder Cup. Your opponents would stand on the first tee, see Colin and think of his record and wonder what he's saying to the team, so that will feel like being one-up just having Monty to start off with.

"Jose Maria is very much in the Seve Ballesteros mould. He's very inspirational and has that Latin flair, never gave a hole away as a player, got up and down for ridiculous halves at certain times and is very passionate and emotional.

"I'd imagine both of them will get the captaincy at some stage, which way round the committee choose to do it is up to them."

The 45-year-old Montgomerie is reportedly keen on the post in his native Scotland in 2014 but may accept the job earlier if Olazabal turns it down.

However, on Thursday, Olazabal's manager confirmed the 42-year-old, who served as Nick Faldo's vice-captain in Valhalla last year, is keen to fulfil the job in Wales.

It had initially been thought that the seven-time Ryder Cupper and two-time Masters champion would attempt to qualify as a player.

Other contenders for the captaincy at Celtic Manor in Newport, south Wales, are Sandy Lyle and 2006 captain Ian Woosnam.

However, Westwood believes neither of them should be considered for the post.

"People only really get one chance to be captain, so that really eliminates Woosie," said Westwood.

"And people are talking about how last time round Nick Faldo had lost a bit of touch with the players because he hadn't played for so long, and Sandy would fall into that category.

"Maybe he hasn't got the bond with some of the players who are going to make the team."
