Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt has signed a one-year contract extension with the Premier League club.

The new deal will keep the 34-year-old at St James' Park until the end of the 2009/2010 season.

The former England international joined the Tyneside outfit from Manchester United in July 2004.

Despite his stay with the Magpies being interrupted by a year-long loan spell at Birmingham, he has made 138 appearances, including 26 this term.

Butt joins team-mates Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi in committing his immediate future to Joe Kinnear's side.

The pair signed new three-year agreements last month during a busy transfer window for the club.

Peter Lovenkrands, Ryan Taylor and Kevin Nolan were all signed to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season.

During his time at Old Trafford, Butt picked up six Premier League titles and two FA Cups, as well as playing in Manchester United's dramatic European Cup win over Bayern Munich in 1999.

The last of his 39 England appearances was under Sven-Goran Eriksson in a 1-0 friendly defeat by Spain in November 2004.

His disciplinary record this season is the worst at the club with seven yellow cards and a dismissal to his name.
