Cipriani left out of England side

Danny Cipriani
England manager Martin Johnson requested Cipriani play for the Saxons

Danny Cipriani will play no part in England's Six Nations opener against Italy at Twickenham on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Wasps fly-half has been called into the England Saxons squad to face Ireland A in Dublin on Friday.

Cipriani, who was dropped for England's final autumn Test against New Zealand, will be joined in the Saxons party by Leicester scrum-half Harry Ellis.

England manager Martin Johnson will name his opening Six Nations side on Tuesday morning.

"Harry and Danny will spend this week with the Saxons as they prepare to play Ireland A on Friday," said Johnson.

"Both players remain in my plans for the Six Nations, but I would like to see them get some game time with the Saxons.

"Harry benefited from playing with them last week, and I will be in regular contact with Saxons head coach Stuart Lancaster during the course of the week."

Former Tigers fly-half Andy Goode, Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel and uncapped Saracens prop Tom Mercey have all been called up to the senior England camp.

Brive's Goode joined England for their warm-weather training in Portugal recently and was formally added to the squad on Monday, while Simpson-Daniel was called up as cover for Harlequins wing Ugo Monye (sore back) and Mercey added as back-up for Wasps's Tim Payne (abdominal muscles).

Leicester's Toby Flood is expected to wear the England number 10 shirt against Italy on Saturday, with London Irish flanker Steffon Armitage likely to be the solitary new cap.

If Armitage and his brother, full-back Delon, are selected, they will become the first brothers to play in the same England side since Rory and Tony Underwood 14 years ago.

Gloucester centre Mike Tindall and Sale Sharks prop Andrew Sheridan are expected to be recalled.
