GB star Mensah-Bonsu joins Spurs

GB basketball star Pops Mensah-Bonsu is to return to the NBA after signing a deal with the San Antonio Spurs.

London-born forward Mensah-Bonsu, 25, played 12 games for Dallas in 2006-07 and has played with the Spurs' minor league side Austin Toros in Texas.

He scored 73 points in six qualifying games in 2008 as the Great Britain side reached the European Championship finals for the first time in 28 years.

San Antonio have won the NBA title four times since 1999.

They are currently second in the Western Conference in midseason, having won 38 of 55 games so far.

Mensah-Bonsu started his basketball career in Hackney before moving to the US as a teenager.

He will become on the third British player in the NBA after Luol Deng and Ben Gordon, who both currently play for the Chicago Bulls.

Since his last stint in the NBA, Mensah-Bonsu has played a season in Italy for Benetton Treviso and started this season at Badalona in Spain, before being released in October in a dispute over a shoulder injury.

He has won 13 GB caps in all, scoring 200 points and taking 120 rebounds, since making his debut early last year.
