Dimitar Berbatov is out of the qualifiers against the Republic and Cyprus
|
Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov will miss Saturday's World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland because of an ankle injury.
The Manchester United forward sustained the injury during the 2-0 defeat by Fulham in the Premier League.
"I've talked to United's medical staff and they informed me that he'll need to rest in the next two weeks," said Bulgarian team doctor Mihail Iliev.
The Republic take on Group Eight leaders Italy in Bari four days later.
The Italians edge out Giovanni Trapattoni's team by goal difference with both teams locked on 10 points after four games.
Steve Finnan is out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the qualifiers because of a hamstring injury.
The Espanyol full-back has been bothered by a hamstring injury for some time and he has suffered a recurrence of the problem.
Finnan has missed the Republic's last two qualifiers because of the injury.
The full-back's withdrawal leaves Giovanni Trapattoni with a 25-man squad.
