World number Roger Federer cruised into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami after brushing aside the challenge of qualifier Kevin Kim.

Federer, who is hoping to end a drought of 12 Masters events without a win, beat the American 6-3 6-2.

The 30-year-old Kim, ranked 107 in the world, had five break points, but was unable to convert any of them.

Third seed Novak Djokovic had an equally easy second-round win, beating Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-3 6-2.

Russian Marat Safin, the 22nd seed, needed three sets before overcoming Spain's Oscar Hernandez 6-4 2-6 6-1.

Britain's number one Andy Murray starts his campaign against Juan Monaco on Saturday.

Safin's sister Dinara Safina had a more comfortable passage to the third round, as the world number two Safina swept aside Mathilde Johansson of France 6-1 6-3.

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva had to fight hard for a 6-0 3-6 6-3 win over 18-year-old wildcard Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia, who is ranked 172nd in the world.

Fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded eighth, also needed three sets to beat Austrian Tamira Paszek 2-6 7-5 6-1.
