Fifa has launched an investigation after an assistant referee was struck on the head by a coin during Northern Ireland's game with Poland on Saturday.

Play was stopped in the World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park as Swede Stefan Wittberg received treatment.

"Fifa is reviewing an incident where a Swedish assistant referee was hit by a coin," said a Fifa spokesman.

Irish Football Association president Rayond Kennedy said he expected a "very hefty fine" as punishment.

"Fifa has received a report from the match referee (Martin Hansson) as well as the match commissioner," added the spokesman.

"Following a review of those two respective reports, Fifa will then decide on whether any disciplinary procedures will be opened."

The coin was thrown from a section of the stadium containing Northern Ireland fans.

The individual concerned was identified and ejected from the ground at half-time.

"We as an association will incur a heavy penalty," added Kennedy.

"Fifa will look at it very badly and we can't afford to be throwing a lot of money away."
