Great Britain's men were still waiting for their first gold of track cycling's World Championships after the pursuit team were third in qualifying.

Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Peter Kennaugh and Jonny Bellis can now only gain bronze in a race-off later on Friday.

Lizzie Armitstead, chasing her second gold in as many days, is in the scratch race, where she is World Cup champion.

But the 30-year old said: "I will be watched because of the World Cup, so I'm not counting my chickens."

Appearing at this event for the first time, Armitstead admited: "At the World Championships everyone steps up their game and I can't affect what the other riders are doing."

The other medal on offer on day three of the championships is in the 1km time trial, an event made famous by Sir Chris Hoy before it was dropped from the Olympics.

David Daniell, 19 from Middlesbrough, could challenge American sensation Taylor Phinney for gold.

And Victoria Pendleton begins her bid for a third medal of the championships in the women's sprint, which concludes on Saturday.

Pendleton won 500m time-trial bronze on day one and women's team sprint silver on Thursday.
