Kennedy seeks leniency from Fifa

Irish Football Association President Raymond Kennedy said they would come down hard on so-called Northern Ireland fans who step over the mark.

Kennedy delivered his rebuke after the IFA has imposed a life ban on the fan who struck an official with a coin during the game against Poland.

Kennedy now hopes that Fifa will take into account the IFA's quick response when they look into the incident.

"I hope Fifa takes this on board when deciding on punishment," said Kennedy.

"We are facing a hefty fine. We have to hope they will look at the case sympathetically.

"We acted quickly. This sort of behaviour has to be stamped out, no question about.

"I'm delighted this person was caught and has been banned for life. They are not welcome at Windsor Park if this is the way they are going to behave.

"I'm also pleased that it was other fans who pointed out the culprit to the stewards, and it proves that it's only a very small minority who are intent on disrupting football matches."

Play was stopped in the World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park on Saturday as Swede Stefan Wittberg received treatment.

Fifa launched an investigation after receiving reports from the referee and match commissioner.

The coin was thrown from a section of the stadium containing Northern Ireland fans.

He is banned from Northern Ireland home and away fixtures.

"Fifa is reviewing an incident where a Swedish assistant referee was hit by a coin," said a spokesman.

"Following a review of those two respective reports, Fifa will then decide on whether any disciplinary procedures will be opened."
